Fighting for the Truth – A Call to Stand Up and Impact Culture

So last night I had this crazy spiritual warfare dream, I felt like I needed to share!

In the dream, I was part of a small group of believers living in a shaky political climate, there was just a lot of stuff going on and it seemed like the country (wasn’t clear which) was falling apart. I remember getting the sense that the enemy was starting to panic a little and be a little more direct in his attacks because he knew God’s children were being awakened and starting to take back the kingdom of God on earth alongside Jesus, so for whatever reason there was a period in the dream when it felt like demons were coming around trying to cause whatever trouble they could. I remember noticing they really did look like they were prowling all around the house we were in, looking for vulnerabilities to take advantage of. I remember each of us had to come face to face with their own issue/temptation that we had to address, but none of us faced our issues/attacks alone. We had support for one another in our struggles as a body, and stood our ground with the same Jesus that conquered death inside of us.

I don’t remember what each of the people in the group were dealing with and how they defeated their own temptation from the enemy, but I do remember noticing that in each one, the attack came in the form of a lie of some kind, and the victory was in tearing it down with the Truth.

I do remember my own challenge: one of them came up to me and challenged me to sing a song (I don’t know why). I accepted, wanting to change the atmosphere with music. I started singing my response which was just a worship song of pure adoration for Jesus and awe at His glory and power. The enemy tried to cut me off and started joining in and singing. It actually had a very pretty but eerie, echoey voice, and sang what sounded like the the same song, but he changed a few of the words, trying to throw me off.

At first listen, they may have sounded like a valid thing to be singing but there was something wrong about the words and I realized he was changing the lyrics from adoration of God to adoration of worldly things. Anything to keep the focus off of Jesus and His Holy name. The Holy Spirit showed me the subtle difference in the lyrics, and I felt like I was supposed to keep singing with the simple… powerful Truth of God. As I sang, and the words rose up within me, it sounded like all of heaven was joining in. It was so incredibly beautiful, the enemy couldn’t stand it and left. That was my dream.

Something interesting that I noticed in the dream is that as believers, none of us were controlled by these temptations/demons. We already belonged to Jesus, but we were still battling over the Truth. The attacks were just attempts to distract us, to hold us back, and to disable us, but we claimed victory in our own areas, and it felt like we were given greater authority in those same areas for all of God’s children.

I love the message for the church at the significance of identifying the enemy’s attempts to manipulating the truth and change the song, and I believe it is our responsibility to turn the song of our hearts and our culture around, back to the amazing love and glory of Jesus. We are to constantly be challenging the lies around us with His perfect Truth.

I think some of the themes in the dream came from listening to Bill Johnson’s “The War in Your Head” podcast, which my brother had recommended recently, and I finally listened to a few days ago. It covers strongholds and attacks of the enemy, and how we handle them, and how they are all ultimately a battle over truth or lies in the landscape of our mind. (You can find the podcast on Bethel Church’s website or watch the sermon on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=605ciBotGvE).

Bill talks about how the enemy’s weapon is just small, fiery darts (lies) and our protection from them is the breastplate of righteousness (Jesus’ righteousness), the belt of truth (helps us stand firm), and the shield of faith (extinguishing the flaming arrows of the enemy). Our only “weapon” is the “sword of the spirit, which is the word of God”, which he teaches is actually more like a small dagger which was used not necessarily used to fight, but more like a tool to pull/dig out flaming arrows out of our own back in the areas where our armor is not covering, our weak areas.

Here is the actual passage:

Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV)/; The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

I was also talking to my husband last night about the Holy Ghost Movie that we saw last year when it was first released and we were saying we wanted to see the newest one “Holy Ghost Reborn” when it comes out in October (http://holyghostreborn.wpfilm.com). We also watched some of the trailers to some of their older movies that WP Films had made, and went to bed with some of these themes of spiritual warfare, miracles, and deliverance on my mind… I believe the Holy Spirit used some of this recent content and recent conversations in my life to describe the role of the church, through this dream.

I pray that God will continue to increase our awareness of His Truth as we press forward as the Body of Christ. Father, make us bold and strong in the knowledge of Your word as we continue to impact our communities. I pray that we become a force for good on the earth as we overcome our own battles, and then impact culture with the new authority we walk in.

Wow, powerful dream! I love that your response in the dream was pure adoration of Jesus. As the church today, we must remember to “sing” our way to victory as we go through times of trouble.

    • I can’t take credit for it, I was just kind of watching myself do it in the dream, so I felt like God was using it as an analogy for the response He wants from His Church.
I agree, I think music coupled with the Truth is very powerful and unlocks our victory, as a body and as individuals.
